Football and Beer

So the NFL season is now underway (Thursday night doesn't feel like the real thing if your team isn't playing). I think this is pretty clearly America's national sport. Unless told otherwise, I assume every American male is an NFL fan. I cannot make the same assumption about baseball.

I'm not one who thinks you need go macro when watching sports, but I'll play along when among non-geeks. Today it was Molson Canadian for me. Not really so bad at first, but the 24 ounce can doesn't do it any favors. You really can't drink this at all warm, and two 12-ouncers would let me keep one in the fridge while sipping the other. All told, not a bad beer for a special teams inspired rout. On top of that, events now suggest that the AFC East may be competitive this year.

I made my Week 1 NFL beers more of an experimentation day. I sampled a funky raspberry wheat beer from Sea Dog in Maine along with an Oaked Arrogant Bastard from Stone. Coast to coast beers for a coast to coast football day! It's good to have the NFL back in swing already.

I would have liked to experiment, but was watching the games w/ "civilians" and just went along. Now I have to drink the rest of my stock of summer-style beers before the weather turns.

I had the pleasure of sampling a few of the newly redesigned Dundee labels while thoroughly enjoying the Bills special effort yesterday. As a transplanted WNY guy, I can say I haven't been this excited about the Bills since Bledsoe led them to that 31-0 rout over NE on opening day 2003. Not that that turned out well in the end...

The 2003 opener was probably Tom Brady's worst day ever... until this year's opener.

Molson isn't so bad, compared to most macros. In fact, most of the Canadian macros are at least bearable. Thankfully, I was able to enjoy some La Fin Du Monde while watching my Vikes get beaten up in Green Bay on Monday. It's gonna be a long year.

The worse your team, the better the beer needs to be. The Vikings just need to keep the games close so they can run the ball every down.

Buttle and friends,
I have supported the Bengals since about 1980 and need some advice. As I can't remember the last time I saw them win a game (limited coverage except late night on cable)and can only rely on the results page of the paper for info can you suggest a suitable beer for me to drink while watching the NFL. Remember I can only get hold of Bud, Michelob Ultra (is that Navajo for dishwater?) and Sam Adams. Am still waiting on delivery of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Or should I just change teams? I am a big hero worshipper of Tim 'The Tool Man Taylor' so I could support the Lions. Please help me. Your football is not the same without the right beer match.

Cheers
Prof. Pilsner

Michelob Ultra is beer... but without all those carbohydrates! If you're concerned about your health then you probably shouldn't be drinking much beer, but Michelob Ultra doesn't taste like beer anyway.

As bad as the Bengals look this year, there is no precedent (nor reason) to start rooting for the Lions. Don't even go there. The Philadelphia Eagles currently feature Sav Rocca, who we are told was a big star down under. Stock up on Sierra Nevada when it arrives.
